It's finally starting to look like a professional website, innit? On a day that I was feeling a little down mentally, I went for my daily walk down to Mrs Macquaries Chair and said to myself "Today isn't a day to write - but what else can I do to develop my blog?" and I spent the whole day designing my website. I'm still in a pretty weird mood, so this isn't going to be a long post (as the essay that I presented on Sunday was...) but more about what I'm developing for the site and some Graphic Design services I can provide on the side.
Graphic Design and Portfolio

I think it's safe to say that I know how to design, and design well. I was the primary graphic designer for Harbour City Bears for 5 years (in fact, my primary platform to be put onto the committee was that I'd do all the graphic design) and would go far and beyond during my Masters to get a "pretty and effective slideshow" on the feedback of my presentations - which happened very often.
All the design is varied as it's made bespoke for the task at hand: from serious and corporate (such as the Standards Australia suite of assignments which includes a slideshow and a word theme) or fun and a little frivolous (like the Bear's penchant for strong theming and puns as seen in The Bearchelor). For branded suites (such as Bear Essential festivals - including the popular BE24 logo), I'm gonna create short videos highlighting the various designs.
What all my designs have in common are the focus on use of typography and careful choice of fonts and weightings, and integrating it with the style of the graphics used. Standards Australia primarily uses Helvetica - the chameleon of all fonts - as it is a... well... standard font (also used all over their website and in their logo). Where in the Bearchelor "Save the Dates" design plays up the rich and romantic feel by using a copperplate font in small caps with a bit of a wider kerning/letter spacing in combination with a script.
Graphic Design Services (and more...)
So Josh, why are you putting up your portfolio on your business blog site? Because it's part of who I am and you'll be seeing a lot of graphic design blogs coming up - and why I think it's important for any NFP organisation to have good graphic design to stand out from the pack in the fight for funding. Me and my partner are figuring out ways to make good graphic design by good graphic designers (also known as me) accessible to smaller Not-for-profit organisations without reducing my worth as a graphic designer with a deeper understanding of what NFPs need. Also, if your in need for some graphic design - shoot me a message using the chat feature in the bottom right, or send me an email at joshua@intertextualmind.com.au.
I'm going to spend a this weekend on developing my graphic design side of this business model - so there will be no post on Sunday. I don't want to overwhelm myself with all this business talk as well. You'll still get one Sunday week (17.Jan 9:00am AEDT) on Social Capital in the film Pride (2014). If you can't find the portfolio its for good reason - it's not live yet. I still need to add the final touches, which include writing a small synopsis of what the design is about.
